1993 Chevy Blazer has problems?

About a week ago I bought a 1993 Chevy S10 Blazer with the 4.3 L fuel injected Vortec V6. It ran fine during the test drive and on the 3 hour drive home. I drove it around town quite a bit and took it to another town about an hour away. It ran fine until yesterday, I was taking it to get license plates and about 15 miles out of town it started chugging and as I pulled into a small town off the highway it died. I thought the gas gauge might be broken so I walked to the local gas station and filled up a can, the vehicle started running, just enough to make it to the station to get a few more gallons and a bottle of heet. I drove it around a bit and it died again. I finally got fed up and just hauled it back home on a trailer. I changed the fuel filter and it started up and drove another couple hundred yards and died again. I'm going to check the fuel pressure and spark plugs tomorrow. I know I installed the new filter the right way, this ain't my first rodeo. I have a lot of experience working on carbureted and throttle-body fuel injected engines, but very little with true fuel injected engines. Any information would be greatly appreciated! Yes, I can hear the fuel pump pumping, but it might not have enough pressure. And yes, i checked it out, and I guess it is a TBI, but I haven't really worked with anything this new, I've really only worked on mid 80s and older. I know its a vortec because it has a huge orange VORTEC on the top of the engine. And from everything I've read, the vortec came out in 88..

First: The Vortec 4300 is a 90° V6 truck engine, replacing the Chevrolet 250 in light trucks and 200 cu in (3.3 L) and 229 cu in (3.75 L) 90-degree V6s in passenger cars. The 4300 is based on the 350 cu in (5.7 L) Chevrolet small-block V8, and first appeared in 1985 with the throttle-body injected LB4 in passenger cars; light trucks and vans used Quadrajet carburetors for 1985. In 1991, the limited-edition GMC Syclone featured a 280 hp (210 kW) and 350 lb·ft (475 N·m) turbocharged and intercooled LB4 with the first use of multi-point fuel injection on a Vortec V6. The central-port injected L35 (Vin 'W') debuted in 1992; the cylinder block was slightly changed, a balance shaft was added to remove minor vibrations, and better breathing yielded 200 hp (149 kW) . Another CPI engine, the LF6, joined in 1996 with the introduction of Vortec cylinder heads, while the LB4 was retired after 1998. In 2002, GM introduced a new multi-point injected LU3 engine, and a LG3 variant appeared soon after. This engine's origins date back to 1955, when the original Chevy small-block V-8 was introduced. Second and the most important: I have dealt with plenty of these trucks and with your symptoms I would first start with the fuel filter as you did but I would go ahead and drop the fuel tank and change the fuel pump. The truck is 20 years old and may still have the original pump in it. These engines require proper fuel pressure all the time. I would recommend using http://www.rockauto.com good prices and fast shipment. Disconnect the battery when doing this to keep the fuel sending unit from shorting out. Good Luck, and keep on Trucki

isnt that a tbi system? i believe thats what my book says anyway.

Vortec started in 1995 on the 4.3L, but nice try folks. This one is TBI though. What is the fuel pressure? Spec for TBI is 9-13, however they will run terrible at 9PSI, and far better at 13.

1993 blazer has problems? course it has problems. most older cars do. you rarely see cars like that on the road anymore. sounds like you were ripped off and its obviously not worth fixing.

Is there any way of switching a 2003 chevy s10 4.3L v6 for a v8?

Either that or does anybody know of where to buy either a turbo or a supercharger kit for it?

The 4.3L block casting was made from a 350 V8 with 2 cylinders removed. A 350 will bolt right in. The serpentine belt system from the 4.3 will bolt right to the 350. If you use the 4.3L serpentine belt, make sure you use a reverse rotation water pump. Use an aftermarket throttle body and intake manifold and you can use the 4.3 computer and fuel injection. The Spike TV Power Block Trucks series did a program on this swap into an S10 a couple of years ago. They did their complete conversion for less than $10,000 which included the price of the truck. You may be able to recover some of the cost of the modifications by selling any good parts from the 4.3L setup so be careful with your disassembly. You may be able to sell the parts locally by advertising in the local newspaper classified section or you could sell the parts on EBay or Craigs List. The truck in this series used a new 350 crate motor, but you could also use a re-manufactured engine from your favorite local auto parts store. You could even get a 350 from a used truck and rebuild it. But if I were going through all of the effort to put a 350 in an S10, I would use a crate motor. You can get a brand new GM performance Parts 290 HP 350 for less than $2000. This engine will be all new parts and will have a warranty. The link below includes the parts and adapters required to drop a 350 into your S10.

yes, of course you can. lots of modification and money involved. well worth it in the end.

Don't see no reason why not, There is a manual available to purchase to tell you all the details on what needs to be changed/modified, I would recommend getting that to see if it's something to want to do. You will want a second car though while you are taking the s10 apart as it is slightly involved and you wont be driving it again for a few days or a few weeks depending upon your skill and amount of time you have to put into it. You can mount the engine forward (and put a cooling fan on the front of radiator or mount it further back (preferred) to get better traction, but then you have to pound the firewall in with a sledgehammer. I really recommend the book, you can get them through any good hi-performance parts supplier and that way you can prevent making any mistakes. I bought one years ago when planning on building one of these trucks and found loads of information and tips in it.
