technician needing help with diagnosing a misfire problem 99 GMC Denali/Yukon?

Ok I have a 99 GMC Denali/ Yukon. 5.7L Vortec Engine. I've scanned it. Has a po300 Misfire code. I checked the Misfire counter on the scanner, And Cyl 2 & 8 are misfiring at the samerate and Number. Checked spark with an inline spark tester. It has spark on 2&8. Checked for spark with plug out, Attached to wire and grounded. Has spark. Checked for compression. they both have 150 to 180 Psi. Since it's a Vortec I can't use noid lights to check for pulse at the injectors because the fuel regulator,Controller, lines, and injectors are all under the Plenum.. My boss said to replace the fuel pressure regulator. Because of the hits on Identafix. So I did. Still has same problem. Replaced fuel injector controller and injectors/Spider. Same freakin problem. I don't want to blame the ECM. I felt for sure the spider would fix it! Because all the other elements needed to fire a cylinder were there. Any Ideas, Or trouble shooting procedures would be very helpful.

mdk68gto, ase certified m tech | Jun 26, 2013
a random misfire can be from many things. too much or too little air flow. a valve that is not seating well. your results from the compression test do have a bit if a variance. 10% is the spec that I have heard. you are not much over that but still over. it could be that.
John | Jun 26, 2013
Still a problem! Try to figure what they have in common. Have had similar problems with volume and pressure in pumps. Even exhaust restriction. Coldest clyenders. Old school-- what does those plugs look like as for as fuel and burn? Any gas smell in oil? Coils and caps if any with cross over made in. Sensors or dist pickup getting out of range! Vacuum leak? Valve springs.
don r | Jun 26, 2013
Carefully label the spark plug wires, the swap one from a good cylinder with one from a suspect cylinder. See if the problem follows the wire. You're doing just what Mr Goodwrench does, but you aren't charging yourself $100/Hr. So far
Stpaulguy | Jun 26, 2013
Replacing the fuel pressure sensor is pretty far down on the Identifix possibilities list. #1 is to check exhaust backpressure, O2 sensors and fuel trims.

Put deisel In my gas car, fixed. Catalytic converters P0420 problem?

Accidentally put deisel in my car like a dumbass. Took it to a shop they told me they would flush the tank and replace my fuel injectors. They did got it back ran fine. I have a toyota celica.. Then the check engine light came on. Took it to autozone to check out the problem. Had p0420 come up. What should I do, what's the problem? I spent $900 on the pricey place I went to, I'm pissed off by them. Yeah in the dumb ass. Need help? I don't want to spend a lot of money. I did research I know I can get some seafoam or some other can and put it in my tank and run for 100 miles but I don't know that would work. I don't know what to do. I don't want to run it anymore, until this light goes away before I fuck anything else up 2003 toyota celica gt. Completely stock nothing is changed inside and out.

Pete M | Jun 25, 2013
Bummer! Go to the link below for a list of the possible causes of and solutions to receiving that code:
Country Boy | Jun 25, 2013
Auto Zone is the worlds worst place to take a *Toyota for engine diagnostics. You ruined the super expensive catalytic converter when you dumped DIESEL fuel in the fuel tank. If you're pissed now wait till you see the price tag for another Toyota catalytic converter. If you had listed the year of your car we could save you a ton of money on a new converter.
thebax2006 | Jun 25, 2013
The code is for the converter not coming up to it's projected threshold. Normally you have to replace the converter with a PO420 code. In your case I would drive it for a couple hundred miles keeping the rpm range at 4,000rpm to try and fry the extra fuel/diesel out of the converter. Erase the code several times if it comes back on while driving the motor at a higher rpm. Try and keep track of how many miles it takes to set the light so you know if it's getting better or staying the same. You can't hurt anything since the converter is saturated already. This isn't the mechanics fault, it's the rest of the damage you caused with the wrong fuel so hope for the best!
tronary | Jun 25, 2013
Don't be a dum bass and get all excited. You could probably have been ok with just draining the tank and filling with gas. The code you got says below efficiency bank one. So I assume you have dual exhaust and two converters. Judt drive normally and let the gas do it's job and flush out the tank and hopefully the converter. I would put injector cleaner, buy the cheap stuff it works quite well, in with every tank fill for perhaps three tanks. The converter should get back to normal after a while, if not it is no great problem as long as you aren't due for an emission check. If the dtc light stays on go back in about a month and have the code pulled again. If all is well it wll turn off the light.
Kash | Jun 26, 2013
The error code p0420 may arise due to one of following reason: 1. Leaded fuel used instead of unleaded 2. Faulty downstream O2 sensor 3. Damaged wiring of O2 sensor 4. Engine Coolant temperature not working properly 5. Exhaust leak from manifold, catalytic, muffler 6. Oil Contamination Check for the faults in your ride which are listed and take necessary step to either repair or replace the fault.

0 5/5 RSL1 - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: ACDelco 17113698 Multi-Port Fuel Injector (Automotive) This price is less than half of what the local parts store wanted for the same injector. This injector comes in a bag with an AC Delco 17113698 sticker on it. The injector its self has 25317628 printed on the side of it. Looking around on the internet indicate that both numbers are completely interchangeable. An engine with bad injectors, is an engine that is wasting gas! I would rather pay for the injectors and have a good running engine than to pay more often at the pump. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , July 6, 2013

Remember this is the every 4K miles one and not the every tank one. It broke up gunk during that tank and I noticed a temporary loss in performance as the gunk was getting displaced. By the end of the tank I had marvelous response. Do not be surprised by some sputter or exhaust smoke with the gunk burnoff. Worked amazing. Delphi FJ10565 Fuel Injector - great price- $172.50 came with bracket

I bought this for 2000 chevy blazer, 4.3L (W) engine. It came with the bracket so I did not need the bracket I ordered. Although the kit only came with the o-ring for the injector body and manifold, you would still need to buy the upper intake manifold gasket kit for the other 2 gaskets (upper manifold gasket and the throttle body gasket). The problem I had with my truck was the check engine light was on "P0135 random misfire code", rough running, and hard starting when hot. When I checked the fuel pressure, the pressure dropped to near zero within a minute of turning the key on and then again it would drop to zero within a minute of turning the key off. When I pulled off the manifold it was obvious that fuel pressure regulator. This kit came with a new fuel pressure regulator and is the upgraded SCPI Conversion to MFI version which eliminates the poppet injectors. If you knock off the cost of the regulator, the cost of the kit about equaled the cost of just one new old style... 5/5 james bager - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Delphi FJ10565 CSEFI to MFI Fuel Injection Conversion

I own a 1996 S-10 Blazer with a 4.3L V6 engine. Recently, I was having a constant hard-start condition. As I was having fuel-pump problems, I decided to replace it first. However, even after replacing the fuel pump, the hard start condition continued. I did a fuel-pressure check and I discovered that the system would not hold pressure; during Key-on-engine-off condition, the pump would produce about 58 PSI and would go down to zero in about 2 minutes. At this time, I decided to replace the Fuel Injection assembly. I found very favorable reviews of this Delphi unit. I did an online search for the FJ10565 model and Amazon had it available and for a very affordable price. Even though Amazon's "Make Sure It Fits" did not find it to be a match for my vehicle, further research with Delphi and RockAuto gave me a better feel it would work (both claimed it was a direct replacement). I received the part in less than two days and I proceeded to install it. Other than having to remove multiple... 5/5 Raul R. What a difference.

Beware this a job not for everyone. You need to be patient, watch what you are doing. This was my first dealing with a spider injector system, but have experience working my own vehicles and am mechanically inclined. This Delphi injector system was just what the old 1999 Astro van needed. It was stalling, hesitating, and then just plain wouldn't start (not even with starting fluid). Ordered the injectors from Amazon with a price no one else could even come close to. The speedy delivery was another plus (it arrived two days before the earliest estimated due date). Spent an hour taking the old parts off, labeling as I went and even took a couple of pictures (just in case). It actually took longer to scrape the old gasket material off the surfaces between the plenum and the lower intake manifold than it did to take it apart. Another 30 to 45 minutes putting it back together. Just work slow, be aware and careful that the number 3 has to go behind and around the number 5, but the parts are... 5/5 W. better than the original

After much research on the SCPI TO MFI CONVERSION on my 1996 GM 5.7l, I purchased this product. For the first time in years I have a truck that consistantly fires on all 8 cylinders without blubbering at all. It was truely worth the effort!Apparently between 1996 and ~2000, GM used the SCPI with poppet valves that were prone to fouling. Cleaning was the first factory recommended fix with conversion to the MFI if returned to the dealer again (via recall notice). From my research this problem effected most V6 and V8's. Well mine was out of recall range, but the fix was worth it. For any moderately experienced person with auto repairs, this was not a particularly difficult install at all. The difficulty factor and time consuming part was mainly in disconnecting all the wiring and brackets in the way to remove the upper intake and then their reattachment. The actual FI was pretty much pull the old, clean, push in the new. I ordered the "may require bracket #----"... 5/5 Carl B. (California) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) If these injectors are installed without fuel pressure, supply and PCM upgrades you will have problems. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , May 24, 2013

My 89 Vette has never run better

0 5/5 Vetteguy - See all my reviews This review is from: ACCEL 150824 Performance Fuel Injector (Automotive) I replaced 2 injectors last year a couple months later more injectors failed including one of the remanufactured injectors. I decided to replace them all with new injectors not remanufactured. These were easy to install and they came with o rings already on the injectors, you will have to reuse your clips but that is minor. The engine started and ran rough till I reset the computer but once it learned the new settings the engine runs flawlesly. I learned my lesson, the time and work involved, it is not worth it to use remanufactured injectors replace them all with new ones and save yourself the headache. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , October 19, 2010

    Better Than Factory Original

I bought this to replace the CSFI "spider assembly" that was the original factory installed part. (Truck is 97 GMC Sierra and had 193K miles on the original part). I have owned the vehicle since it was new. Some people are having problems with the original poppet style CSFI injectors which either leak or get clogged. This part is the GM replacement for California vehicles due to gasoline additives causing issues,(misfires, rough idle). My fuel pressure regulator was leaking and I believe I also had a leaking injector. This injector replaces the original style with this Multiport style. This places the injector at the end of the fuel tube and injects straight into the lower intake manifold. The installation was fairly easy and I put it as a moderate skill level repair. You have to remove the upper intake manifold to install, so there are a lot parts to remove and wires to disconnect. I was surprised that not only did the new mounting bracket come with it, but also all of the gaskets... 5/5 John H. (TN) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Runs like a top

0 5/5 Scott (San Clemente, CA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: ACDelco 217-3029 Fuel Injector (Automotive) This is a great improvement for your Vortec 350. I had to change intake gaskets, adn while I had it apart, I updated the old poppet style nozzles to this, and couldn't be happier. The kit comes with everything you need, and this is the best price you can find it at. When I got done, my Suburban ran much smoother. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , May 10, 2010

    Vortec 350 (5.7L) CSFI to MPFI Upgrade/Conversion

0 5/5 Drider - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: ACDelco 217-3029 Fuel Injector (Automotive) My 98 GMC K1500 was suffering from multiple misfires + SES light. I had changed plugs, cap, and wires. The idle was very rough and I had a severe loss of power. At highway speed usually you could not tell there was a problem at times. After installing this Injector, the idle is smooth the SES light went off and I’m back in business.Kit came with all required seals and a new bracket to mount ejector on. The only thing that held me up was getting each injector to lock into its respective port. I think Locking mechanism could use a rework, But I eventually I got them all to lock in. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , October 23, 2013

A bright green Ford Mustang Funny Car with bright yellow panels that recalls the early days of Funny Cars before the NHRA had a Funny Car class. To make extra bucks the guys would replace the two big 4 barrel carburetors on their A/FX cars with fuel injectors and go match racing at drag strips across America. It was some of the most exciting drag racing ever and unlike today's Funny Cars if you drove a Ford you had a Ford engine under the hood. This one is powered by one of the "Baddest" engines to ever run the 1/4 mile. A 427 Ford SOHC semi-hemi. This design is what happens when you let old hippies design race cars.
